Family Law Department

 Farhat Akbar-

Farhat has specialised in the area of Family Law since qualifying as a solicitor in 1998. Her caseload covers a broad range of family law: divorce, ancillary relief, private and public law children act cases, domestic violence and cohabitees’ disputes. Prior to joining the firm, Farhat was salaried partner and supervisor/head of the family department in a medium sized practice covering both publicly and privately funded cases. During this time she has undertaken many high profile cases in the High Court, Family Division, ranging from wardship and tracing child’s whereabouts, to children’s issues involving inter-relationship of English law and jurisdiction of non-Hague Convention countries. Other high profile cases include complex ancillary relief cases, including a recent successful case in the Court of Appeal. Farhat has been a member of the Law Society Family Law Panel since July 2005. She is also a mentor on the Law Society Mentoring Scheme.

The  family department will deal with all aspects of family law:

  • Divorce, judicial separation, civil partnership disputes
  • Financial and property disputes between partners, following breakdown of a marriage or relationship
  • Disputes over children, such as residence, contact, prohibited steps, specific issue orders
  • Injunction orders and other protection for victims of domestic abuse

The aims of the department are:

• to provide a valuable service to the community, by providing a high standard of legal advice on a wide range of family law issues

• to give advice to clients that is clear, practical and sensitive to their needs

• to assist clients at a difficult time in their lives, to find a solution that is in the best interests of them and any relevant children, in the most cost efficient way possible.

I am a member of the Law Society Family Law Panel, and have specialised in family law since qualifying in 1998.
